Walmart Low-er Tox Grocery Items
Budget friendly better choice food finds at Walmart? Yes! It is possible! This is just the start of food finds because I couldn't fit it all in this post.
Please remember:
The point of this post isn't perfection but to encourage better in store swaps for those on a budget and wanting to do better. Remember, we eat and buy the food we do often based on affordability, accessibility, geographical location and so much more. Not everyone has the lifestyle or means to make everything from scratch or buy only organic, regenerative farmed etc.
Canned food
Soooo many of the organic great value canned foods were cheaper than the name brand! Like almost all of them!
Ground meat
This marketside grass fed ground beef was actually a bit cheaper and a bit better step than the conventional option. A lot of the marketside "grass fed" options were cheaper.
Marinara
Two better options I found were the organic great value and the newman's own! Both like a dollar less than name brand marinara and they are better options.
Salsa
Bettergoods and Newman's both offered better options with ingredients and were less than the new brand conventional options.
Oatmeal
These organic great value oats were CHEAPER than quacker.
Chicken
Pre cut "free Range" or organic chicken was expensive pre cut - but if you grabbed the whole free range chicken it was $1.67/lb which was also cheaper than their normal chicken breasts pre cut. You could also use this for bone broth to cook with.
Produce
While not perfect, the EWG clean 15 is a great way to stock up on non organic produce with the least amount of pesticides. Bonus to grab them when they are in season.
Carrots, sweet potatoes, mangos, mushrooms, cabbage, avocado, sweet corn, pineapple, onions, papaya, asparagus, honeydew, kiwi, sweet peas, watermelon are all better options!
Tho - if it were me, I would still by non organic produce overall before pre packaged/ultra processed items if I had the option to.
Rice
Organic rice was expensive. If it was me I would try to find white basmati rice from Cali or India in a bag (they had a few options on the bottom shelf great value brand). Naturally they lower levels of inorganic arsenic.
Either way: I would soak whatever rice I bought overnight in water to lower arsenic overall.
Apple sauce
The organic great value brand was cheaper than Mott's and other name brands.
Cheese
Organic great value brand had better options and was less expensive than something like Kraft. If you can buy a block and shred it yourself - even better option!
Eggs
It's no secret eggs are expensive and hard to come by for many. Even if it wasn't organic or free range - I would still eat an egg. Any egg I could find/afford.
There is still too much nutrition in an egg to pass up.
But! The marketside cage free eggs were cheaper than many of the big name brand options and a good option (ie egg lands best etc)
Frozen veggies
I cannot stress enough how under rated frozen organic veggies are as a cost effective way to get a bit better quality veggies for a better price.
Frozen fruit
Same goes for frozen fruit, many of the organic great value brand had cheaper frozen fruit options!
Milk
Honestly I was shocked to find that the organic great value brand milk was cheaper than the name brand milks. (More so if you bought the gallon). It certainly still is more expensive than the store brand milk but if you have the wiggle room to go up a bit in price, this was better!
Butter
Kerrygold was certainly the best option in store but it was also more expensive. The great value organic brand came in cheaper overall but with more butter sticks. Butter is something I still would personally use regardless I would just try to make sure the ingredients were real ingredients like milk, cream, salt etc.
Sausage
Just happened to see the Marketside Uncured Fully Cooked sausages but they were a better option and also cheaper than the name brands.
Fruit snacks
The better goods brand had better ingredients, was the same price as the non organic options but it also contained more fruit snacks.
